I love the flavor combination of this Italian seasoning + the fact that it’s not packed with any filler ingredients. I honestly haven’t needed store-bought Italian seasoning since developing this perfect blend. I hope you love it as much as I do ❤️.

Keep a batch of this Italian seasoning on hand for making my ground turkey skillet, Italian meatballs, homemade marinara sauce and so much more.

If you’ve ever purchased store bought Italian seasoning you have probably bought a spice jar that is full of dried green herbs. Flavorful yet lacking a little something. I made a classic Italian seasoning but elevated the recipe with a coarse salt and garlic.

“Wonderful and great! Forget buying any other Italian seasoning, just make your own! I added more crushed red chili because I like a little spice. Thanks for the great recipe!”

What’s in Homemade Italian Seasoning

  • Dried oregano: Oregano is essential to this spice blend. It’s a classic flavor found on most Italian dishes. Don’t skip it!
  • Dried basil: This adds a sweet and bright flavor that pairs perfectly with Italian dishes.
  • Dried thyme: Thyme is also a staple herb in Italian cooking, and adds an earthy and almost minty flavor.
  • Dried sage: Sage pairs so well with richer ingredients, which is why it’s often found in Italian recipes. It’s crucial to this spice blend.
  • Dried parsley: Parsley adds bright flavor that helps balances out the stronger herbs in this spice blend.
  • Dried rosemary: Rosemary is woody and peppery and makes this Italian seasoning spice blend more complex. I would not recommend skipping this one either!
  • Garlic powder: Garlic powder is less traditional in Italian seasonings, but is a great flavor enhancer and brings out the savory flavors of the rest of the herbs.
  • Red pepper flakes: Just the right amount of heat! Feel free to skip it if you don’t like spice. Or even increase it if you like things a little hotter like me.
  • Paprika: Paprika is smoky and adds great depth to this spice blend.
  • Salt: I like to add a little kosher salt to my Italian seasoning blend. It’s a flavor enhancer and adds a lot to this blend. Don’t skip it!

Make it spicier: Increase the red pepper flakes or even a dash of cayenne if you like things more on the spicy side.

Make it salt-free: Working with a saltier dish? Feel free to either reduce or omit the salt.

Make it sweeter: Increase the basil for a sweeter finish to this Italian seasoning.

This Italian seasoning includes salt and garlic, which many store-bought Italian seasonings do not. If you’re using this as an Italian seasoning blend in a recipe, you may not need to add additional salt if the recipe calls for it.
