For decades, scientists couldn’t grow human brain stem cells in a dish, which has posed a real problem for research into diseases that attack the brain stem, including spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and ALS. In both, nerve cells in the brain stem gradually stop working. People lose the ability to swallow, which can lead to pneumonia when food or liquid gets into the lungs, and eventually the ability to breathe.
