Latest Service Codes for MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile

In March 2023, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in accordance with the regulatory modernization initiative, under the umbrella of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), announced the commencement of harmonized short codes across all networks and directed the telecommunications operators in Nigeria to commence the implementation of the harmonized service codes for all telecommunications services.

This meant all mobile network operators in the country, which include MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9-Mobile, would use the same code for their services, which include data subscription, airtime recharges, balance checks, et cetera.

According to NCC, the initiation of the harmonized codes would make it easier for Nigerians to memorize single codes for various services across all mobile networks instead of memorizing the different codes for the respective operators. This was to also improve the telecom consumers’ quality of experience (QoE).

The old and new harmonized shortcodes were allowed to be used concomitantly by the telecom consumers from the time of announcement by the NCC until May 17, 2023, when all the networks migrated to full implementation of the new codes.

The NCC said the period between March and May 17 for concurrent usage of the codes was provided to enable telecommunication consumers to familiarize themselves with the new codes for various services.

Here is a list of the latest service codes for all major networks in Nigeria (MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile) as approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC):

  • *300#is the code for Call Centre/Help Desk on all mobile networks
  • *301#for voice Mail Deposit
  • *302#for Voice Mail Retrieval
  • *303#for Borrow Services
  • *305#for STOP Service or Value-added Services (VAS)
  • *310#for Check Balance
  • *311*Recharge PIN# is for credit recharge.
  • *312#is for Data Plan Subscriptions
  • *321#is for Share Services.
  • *323#is for Data Plan Balance
  • *996# is now for verification of subscriber identity module (SIM) registration or NIN-SIM linkage.
  • *2442#is retained for Do-Not-Disturb (DND) unsolicited messaging complaint management.
  • *3232#is the code for porting services, also known as mobile number portability.

Telecommunications operators in the country have since adopted the Nigerian Communications Commission’s approval of the uniform Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) codes for all mobile networks in the country.

In order to fully implement this new initiative, the NCC stated that any mobile network provider in the country (which includes the main network providers – MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9Mobile, and others) that refuses to migrate will be restricted from further providing services to its customers.

In addition, it was implied that all mobile network services would utilize a single customer care number (*300#), as well as a single code for credit recharge and a code for checking balances.

In accordance with the NCC’s conditions, MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile had notified their millions of customers to use the new service codes, and even till date, any customer who dials the former code is always redirected to a menu consisting of the new ones, which shows that they have all fully adopted the new codes.
